1911 First trip to teach in China

Here is the first bit of China:
When I reflect on my first arrival in China, I was pleasantly surprised, as I had no idea what to expect.

I had encountered many different perspectives, but none measured up to the genuine warmth, love, and welcome I received when I first arrived.

Dr. Xu met me at a busy ferry terminal while I was traveling from Hong Kong to Mainland China. Although we had never met before, she recognized me immediately and welcomed me with a warm hug.

Our lively discussion about Psychology and Sandplay was informative, engaging, and inspiring, marking the start of my twice-yearly visits and teaching in China from 2011 to 2019, which were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

During all my stays in China—whether in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, or Jinan—each workshop was complemented by an exciting sightseeing trip or a special treat, like an excellent massage.

The food and hospitality during my stays in China were of the highest quality. I love the people I was privileged to meet and their extraordinary dedication to learning.

Through presence, creativity, and self-awareness. This journey not only strengthened my connection to myself but also deepened my appreciation for the transformative power of Sandplay Therapy.

Working with Orphans doing Sandplay

My first flight to China felt like stepping into a dream — a mix of excitement, curiosity, and quiet wonder.  When the plane finally descended, the landscape unfolded beneath me — mountains, rivers, and endless city lights glimmering like stars on earth. It was more than just a journey to a new place; it was a journey into a new chapter in my life… exciting discoveries, expanding my perspective, teaching and enriching my own understanding  of sandplay with lively exchange of knowledge and experience

Exploring China

Graphite on the street walls

There was something mesmerizing about the graphite on the street walls — soft, silvery strokes that seemed to breathe life into the space. Each mark told a quiet story, a dialogue between hand, surface, and spirit. Under the shifting light, the graphite shimmered gently, revealing different shades of grey, almost alive with energy. It carried both strength and delicacy — raw yet refined, temporary yet eternal. In its simplicity.

Sight of men sweeping the streets with simple broom

While in China, one of the moments that stayed with me most wasn’t found in the grand temples or the busy city lights, but in the quiet sight of men sweeping the streets with simple brooms. There was something deeply humbling about it — the patience, the care, and the pride they took in their work. It reminded me that dignity isn’t found in the job we do, but in how we do it. Watching them, I saw a reflection of discipline, respect, and mindfulness — values deeply woven into Chinese culture. It was a beautiful reminder that small acts of care can hold great meaning.
